How a multi-service network is improving security and safety for the Nanjing Metro.

XINJIEKOU_Station-Line_2In 2013 the Nanjing Metro in China, one of the fastest growing in the country and serving a population of over seven million sought to improve its safety and security and develop a dedicated transmission network. In seeking this solution the Nanjing Metro Corporation selected OTN Systems, a leading developer of high-end multi-service networks for metros, light rail systems, people movers and railways worldwide. The delivery of the metro public security communication system will provide the transmission system connecting all public security communication applications such as Voice, Police Trunked Radio System, CCTV and other subsystems. The system is delivered by OTN Systems, through its local partner.

The Metro Public Security Network backbone is a private network and is key in assuring security of all passengers and metro personnel and serves a number of benefits:

  • CCTV plays a main role in this – checking for/recognizing of suspicious persons, packages and behavior plus pickpockets and other criminal or anti-social activity. The huge amount of safety cameras demand high and efficient use of the bandwidth and easy control.
  • The network will allow the Nanjing Public Security Bureau to distribute contact information of police officers, information on lost & found property, emergency alarm information, etc. to all metro stations.
  • The network is also used as backbone for the wireless Police Trunked Radio System which allows metro police officers to communicate to the police headquarters.
  • Also the network itself is fully safe: it is impossible to hack this network and the different applications simply cannot impact each other.  The network itself is a stand-alone network

Therefore the backbone network needs to be highly reliable and fully secure with large bandwidth. The OTN Systems flagship product OTN-X3M, with a transport capacity of 10G and its unique SLAN function perfectly complies with these requirements. Nanjing Metro Line 11 started construction in 2012 and is expected to be operational ahead of the 2014 Youth Olympic Games held in the city. Nanjing Metro Line 4 will start operation in 2015.  The delivery schedule of OTN equipment for line 4 will be around mid-2014

This work with the Nanjing Metro is not the only project that OTN Systems has developed in China, as they are also providing the transmission system connecting all telecom, signalling and other subsystems on the the 9.1 km long Qilin tramline. Furthermore OTN networks are in operation in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other major cities.

OTN Systems was created on July 1st 2008 but has a track record that goes back to the eighties within the Siemens Group. OTN Systems is the designer and supplier of the Open Transport Network (OTN). OTN is a unique system that can integrate virtually all existing applications for voice, data, LAN, video, SCADA, etc. into one high speed network, using a fiber optic backbone.
